1935 Plymouth PJ Deluxe / Specs, Photos, Model Details

Plymouth was created to be a more affordable line of automobiles for Chrysler. Plymouth would compete directly against Ford and Chevrolet. Affordability was a good thing during the Great Depression years and is exemplified by our 1935 Plymouth PJ Deluxe featured in this article.

The New 1935 Plymouth

The 1935 Plymouth was built new from the ground up. The 1935 models were completely re-engineered from the 1934 models. An example of this was that the engine was positioned more forward over the front axles. The passenger compartment was moved  further toward the rear increasing legroom and giving better weight distribution. The same X-frame was used but was improved.

There were two types of Plymouth automobiles for 1935. These were both PJ models but one was designated Business and one was Deluxe. The Deluxe line included a four-door sedan, a two-door and a four-door Touring Sedan and a Rumble seat Coupe. These were all built on a 113" wheelbase chassis.

As far as design is concerned, the 35 Plymouths started to have some streamlined looks losing some of the boxy look of it's predecessors. The front fenders had a pontoon look and curved downward. The rear fenders also had a more rounded look. Briggs supplied the bodies as they had in previous years.

1935 also saw a major change in how air flowed into the back passenger area. This included heat as well. Plymouth designers put a passage under the front seat which allowed ventilated air to get back there as well as warm air put out by the car's heater. This was a welcome improvement to those knowing how cold it could get in the rear passenger area.

Plymouth had some significant advantages over competitor Ford. This was nothing totally unexpected since Ford had the reputation of being slow on innovation. Many attribute this to Henry Ford's desire to keep things the same as much as possible. During the 1930's both General Motors and Chrysler made good inroads with potential Ford buyers.

Plymouth offered hydraulic brakes and Ford only offered mechanical. Plymouth had a tubular front axle and Ford an I-Beam. Plymouth offered manifold heat control and Ford did not. These are only a few comparisons.

The Deluxe and Business lines could be told apart by trim differences as well as interior appointments. As an example, wood grain dashboard and the ivory horn button was absent on the Business models. Regarding the exterior, all Plymouth Deluxe models had chrome plated brass headlights and taillights, chrome windshield frame and stainless hood rings.The Business models had lighter front and rear springs, different front shocks and no sway bar like the Deluxe.

Same Engine With Improvements

Engine re-engineering also took place. The same six cylinder power plant from 1934 was used but there were major changes. The block was redesigned to allow for more fuller cooling of the pistons, especially the rear ones. In addition, there were changes to the outside engine dimensions which occurred only in 1935. This meant that the 35 engine couldn't be placed in earlier models without some modifications.

Plymouth's Increasing Sales

Since 1930 Plymouth rose to third place in sales. In 1935 Plymouth found itself as the biggest low-priced car with hydraulic brakes, all steel body, new better weight distribution and better fuel economy. Plymouth's production for 1935  grew to over 350,000 units. About 250,000 vehicles were Deluxe models.

As mentioned above, the engine in the 1935 Plymouth was the same six cylinder as in 1933 and 1934 models except with some improvements. This was a 201 cubic inch straight six delivering 82 HP.

The Plymouth Deluxe had four wheel hydraulic brakes and semi-elliptical leaf springs were used on front and rear suspension. Wheelbase was 113.0 inches.

Frame was a reinforced  X-Type.

All automobiles from this period are great collector cars. The 1935 Plymouths are milestone vehicles in as much as they were redesigned from the ground up. Their smooth lines and fresh contours set them apart. The engines for this model year also received major modifications.

The 1935 series were the last of the letter series Plymouth cars that started with the model "Q" in 1928.The 1935 Plymouth PJ was advertised as the biggest low priced car on the market that used about 20 percent less fuel than it's competitors.

As of this writing, the top valuations from various price guides for the 1935 Plymouth PJ Deluxe range from about $16,000 to $23,000. The convertible models have the highest valuations, ranging from about $25,000 to $39,000. The highest prices are those in mint restored condition.

The Plymouth Barracuda Pony Car

An historical fact is that the Plymouth Barracuda was the first Pony Car coming on the market about two weeks before the Ford Mustang. The first Barracuda (1964) was actually an option package for the Plymouth Valiant model. By the time 1967 came around the Plymouth Barracuda had no resemblance to the Valiant model from which it came although there were mechanical similarities. The connection with the Plymouth Valiant would entirely end with the 1970 Barracuda model.

The base engine for the 64 Barracuda was a 225  slant six. There was also a 273 cubic inch V-8 available delivering 180 HP. These engines would continue to be employed with the 1965 and 1966 Barracudas.

The 1968 Plymouth Barracuda was among the second generation models. Many would say that the second generation Barracuda was what should have been designed for first generation models.The second generation Plymouth Barracuda was available in fastback, notchback and convertible styles.

The Plymouth Barracuda was designed by John Samsen who also did design work for the first Ford Thunderbirds. It was also Samsen who chose the word "Barracuda" for this new Plymouth line. The Barracuda name prevailed over management's suggestion of "Panda". Barracuda was probably a good choice for what would become a true muscle car.

Plymouth Barracudas were produced from the 1964 model year through 1974.

The Barracuda Formula S was available since 1965. The Formula S package for 1968 included engines of either a Commando 340 or the 383 cubic inch design. In addition to this the Formula S came with.heavy-duty suspension and wheels, heavy duty shock absorbers and E70-14 Red Streak tires. front fender badges and special hood inserts.  The Barracuda Formula S was known for superior cornering and general handling.

Your 68 Plymouth Barracuda Formula S would have cost you new about $2,700 for the hardtop, about $2,900 for the fastback version and about $3,050 for the convertible.

Total 1968 Plymouth Barracuda production was 46,018 units. Out of that number there were a total of 28,775 V-8 models. Total Formula S 340's were 3,917 units and total Formula S 383's were 1,270 units. These production numbers are estimates only. There are some variations depending on source.

As mentioned above, the 68 Formula S as built with either a Commando 340 or the 383 cubic inch engine. The 340 was rated at 275 HP and the 383 cubic inch at 300 HP. The car's speedometer had a top speed indicator of 150 MPH. The 1968 model year also saw a 426 Hemi package put into only about 50 Barracudas.

Brakes on this model were either four wheel drums or an option of front discs and rear drums.

Suspension on the 68 Barracuda included a front independent wishbone and a live axle rear with leaf springs.

Dimensions for the 68 Barracuda Formula S included a wheelbase of 108.0 inches, an overall length of 192.8 inches, a width of 71.6 inches and a height of 52.8 inches. Weight was 3,340 lbs. The second generation wheelbase was increased by 2 inches.

The Plymouth Barracudas from the 1960's ate true muscle cars. As mentioned above, the Barracuda was the first Pony Car, coming on the market a few weeks prior to the Ford Mustang.

plymouth barracuda hemiWhen it comes to Plymouth Barracuda collector popularity, everything pretty much starts with the second generation, 67-69 models, where the design departure from the Valiant occurred.

As of this writing you'll likely see asking prices for 1968 Plymouth Barracudas in the range of $15,000 to $29,000 depending of course on overall condition and mileage. Restored Barracudas will be on the high side and priced to the quality and degree of restoration.

You'll also see the limited edition 426 Hemi priced perhaps in the high $100,000 area. There were only about fifty of these Hemi models built for 1968 and of course they are rare.

Things ere tough for the automakers during the 1930's. One solid performer however was Plymouth, an automobile produced by the Chrysler Corporation.

Plymouth pulled off a great sales year during 1933. The company had a 25% share of the new car market.  That's saying a lot. As if that wasn't enough, Chrysler decided to add another model to their 1934 lineup.

This would be a Plymouth model with many more luxury appointments.This was for an automobile that cost about $100 more than a Ford but was a heavier and better equipped vehicle. In other   words, the 1934 Plymouth was considered a good buy.

The automobile featured in this article is a 1934 Plymouth Coupe. The 1934 Plymouth coupe was considered the best engineered vehicle in its class. It's all steel body along with stock options ranging from 4 wheel hydraulic brakes to floating engine mounts the Plymouth was definitely ahead of its time.

An Engineering Change From 1933 to 1934

Plymouth made some  engineering changes for the 1934 model year. Plymouth replaced the successful PD and PCXX models with the PE and PFXX models. The new models had mechanical differences. They came with an advanced independent front suspension that used unequal A arms. Overall engine power was increased by 10% over the 1933 models by increasing the engine stroke. In ways other than these the PE and PF were mechanically very similar to the 1933 models.

The Plymouth PE models had a 114.0 inch wheelbase. The PFXX models had a 108.0 inch wheelbase.

Compared to the 1933 Plymouth, the 34 models had a more rounded body. At the same time it did retain some of the classic early 1930's styling. It was this mixture of classic styling and independent front suspension that made this car unique..For 1934 the price leader was the “New Plymouth Six” PF. This model was built on a 108” wheelbase. Styles included the business coupe, rumble seat coupe, and two or four door sedan styles.

Competition was intense during 1934 and Plymouth came out with a few additional models. One was the "Special Six". The “Special Six” series PFXX  came out for the spring selling season. This automobile had a chrome-plated grill, chrome windshield frame, twin trumpet horns, twin tail lights, chrome headlight shells, interior sun visor, and an ash tray and glove compartment on the dashboard. Another model, the PFXX Town Sedan also joined the lineup..

Plymouth Shines During the Great Depression

Plymouth was considered a lower priced automobile among the Chrysler line. As such, Plymouth did a lot to help Chrysler survive the Great Depression. Sales numbers for Plymouth were a positive for Chrysler during the 1930's, with it's 25% share of the new car market in 1933 being a good example. In fact, in 1930 the Plymouth automobile was sold by all Chrysler divisions, Chrysler, DeSoto and Dodge.

Plymouth Street Rods

The 34 Plymouth Coupe makes a pretty good street rod and chances are you've seen one. Parts are generally available with a little searching and some companies manufacture body parts such as fiberglass front fenders for those wishing to customize. A good number of these street rods have supercharged engines and modified suspensions for drag racing. We've also come across 34 coupes built as low-riders. Don't be surprised to find 454 cubic inch Chevy engines in some of these Plymouth street rods.

Production did not  begin for the 1934 models until late December 1933.

The 1934 Plymouth was built with a 201 cubic inch six-cylinder engine which originally came out a year before in 1933. This engine was mounted in Plymouth's well known "Floating Power" rubber engine mountings.

Transmission was a 3-speed manual. Brakes were four wheel hydraulic drums.

The Plymouth Coupe had a curb weight of 2,660 lbs.

Plymouth new car pricing for the 1934 models ranged from $485 to $700. The highest priced models were the PE Town Sedan and Convertible. The price range for these automobiles clearly shows the effect of the Great Depression. The year 1934 would have been in the depths of the depression. The 1934 Plymouth Business Coupe sold new for $595. Total 1934 production for that model was 28,400.

Any automobile from this era is a good collector car. The 1934 Plymouth Business Coupe fully restored and in mint showroom condition will have asking prices, as of this writing, in the high $20,000 range to the $40,000 range. We also see a fully restored 1934 Coupe with an asking price of over $50,000. There are also plenty of street rods for sale that also have prices into the $20,000 range.
