Featured in this article is the 2008 Lamborghinin Gallardo Superleggera.

The Lamborghini Gallardo is a high-performance super car built in Italy. The Gallardo Superleggera is the higher priced model. On the outside, the Gallardo, built in Sant'Agata Bolognese, Italy, benefits from outstanding Italian design. This car simply looks exotic and flamboyant at any angle. It's an Italian Super Car. It's super fast and has a hefty price tag to go along with it.

The Gallardo Models

The Lamborghini Gallardo is available in three models. There is a base two-door coupe, a Superleggera and a Spyder convertible.

The car has an aluminum body and space frame allowing it a better power to weight ratio. These powerful cars have employ a 520 hp (some sources say 530 HP) 5.0-liter V-10 along with a six-speed manual transmission (optional is a sequential "E-gear" transmission). The Gallardo is an all-wheel drive automobile and comes with several standard safety features such as airbags, antilock brakes, traction control, and an electronic stability system.

The three models of the 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo are the Coupe ($186,250) and Spyder ($217,000) versions. The Superleggera ($222,800) comes only as a coupe. Options for the Superleggera include a stationary rear wing instead of the standard articulated wing that rises and falls with the speed of the car. Also on the options list are eight-piston carbon disc brakes ($10,000), as well as a window net, fire extinguisher, and a bar for competition seat belts. The six-speed manual transmission is a no-cost option.

The Gallardo Superleggera

It was exceedingly clear from the beginning that the Gallardo Superleggera was something special. A light weight Lamborghini that showed a race pedigree. In Italian the term 'superleggera" means "superlight".

As you can imagine, the lighter weight (126 lbs less) Superleggera is very quick and amazingly fast. It holds to the road so well that you'll likely work the tires only on a racing circuit. In addition, the Superleggera has terrific braking capability. The acceleration performance is truly exhilarating and at full speed in the Sport mode the E-gear changes gears like a race driver striving to cross the finish line with a win.

By the same token the Superleggera in it's automatic or normal manual modes shifts very smoothly and functions very well at low speeds. It's been said that the Gallardo Superleggera is not as easily street driven as a Porsche 911 Turbo but it's not a Dodge Viper either.

Superleggera Performance

The low and wide Gallardo Superleggera is comfortable to drive. This is the case whether you're in heavy traffic or cruising at low speed.

To drive the Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera is to drive one of the most exciting, powerful and capable sports cars in the world today. Lamborghini claims Zero to 60 mph time of 3.8 seconds, and a top speed just under 200 miles per hour. Some reports claim the Superleggera can attain 210 MPH.

Also note that race Gallardo Twin Turbo conversions can juice the horsepower up to the 700 range on normal fuel and above 1,000 on racing fuel.

Only about 350 of these cars were available worldwide, making them instant collector's items.

As mentioned above, the car comes with a powerful 520 hp 5.0-liter aluminum V-10 engine. Some claims are that the engine puts out 530 HP. Some reports put the horsepower at precisely 523.

If you're looking for low fuel consumption this is not the automobile for you. The Lamborghini Gallardo will get you about 9.5 miles per gallon in the city and about 19 miles per gallon on the highway.

Transmission is a six speed manual. The six-speed e-gear automated manual  is a no-cost option to the six-speed manual.

Front and rear brakes are ventilated discs.

Dimension for the 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera include an overall length of 169.3 inches, a wheelbase of 100.8 inches, a width of 74.8 inches and a height of 45.9 inches. This is a low car. Ground clearance is 5.1 inches. These are the same dimensions of all 2008 Lamborghini Gallardo models.

The lighter weight of the Superleggera has a lot to do with the carbon fiber used for the  engine cover, the rear diffuser, the underbody cover, the exterior mirrors, the rear spoiler, the side sills. Even so the Superleggera still sports a curb weight of 3,434 lbs, not entirely lightweight by some standards. Another interesting fact is that the Gallardo Superleggera was known to run an impressive 8.72 seconds in the quarter mile at 169 mph. Impressive might be an understatement.

Lamborghini Gallardo production ended in 2013. Total production of the Gallardo model was 14,022 units. The Lamborghini Gallardo, first introduced at the Geneva Motor Show, was the most-built Lamborghini and it ranks among the most successful super sports cars. It's an interesting fact that during the first forty years of of Automobili Lamborghini production averaged about 250 cars per year. During the ten years of Gallardo production the yearly average as about 1,400 units.

Even more amazing is almost half of all 30,000 Lamborghinis built since the company was first founded in 1963, are Gallardos

2004 Lamborghini Gallardo

The Lamborghini Gallardo is one of the supercars. A luxury supercar. The Gallardo is a mid-engine two-seat sports car with a near 500 horsepower 5.0-liter V10 engine, with a 6-speed manual transmission and all-wheel drive. Ferruccio Lamborghini's Ultimate High Performance Sports Car

The company was started by Ferruccio Lamborghini. The wealthy Italian amassed a fortune and had at one time been a tractor builder. By the early 1960's he was working on a design for a sports car, a different kind of sports car, that took root in 1962 and by 1963 was ready to launch. In that year he formed Automobili Ferruccio Lamborghini.

Ferruccio Lamborghini's goal was to build what people would characterize as the ultimate driving machine. There are quite a few that would agree that he achieved his goal. In a lot of ways everything about the Lamborghini is about power and speed. Sporty handling and superb acceleration are also trademarks of this car.

The first car that Lamborghini would come out with had a twelve cylinder engine. This first engine would be designed and engineered by Giotto Bizzarrini who had a good deal of experience with Ferrari. The Lamborghini supercar, the 350 GTV, would be unveiled to the world at the Turin Auto Show in November 1963.

Following the successful debut of the 350 GTV came Lamborghini's 400 GT. The 400 GT had a few enhancements. This included a four liter engine and the first gearbox designed exclusively by Lamborghini.

During the first decade of the luxury sports car company's existence growth was rapid. The first financial squeeze occurred around 1973 when the entire world was affected by the Oil Crisis. After this crisis the company changed ownership several times. Audi took over Lamborghini in 1998 from a group of Malaysian investors who themselves had taken over the company from Chrysler.

Today Lamborghini is owned by Volkswagen Group through it's Audi subsidiary.

The Gallardo's new design, a carbon based body, was a collaboration between Italdesign Giugiaro and Lamborghini's Luc Donckerwolcke.

Believe it or not, the Gallardo is referred to as the "Baby Lamborghini". The purpose of the Gallardo model was and still is to maintain the style and attitude of Lamborghini's larger 12-cylinder cars.

The four wheel drive gives the Gallardo remarkable handling attributes but at the same time the car gives the feel that a bit more power is from the rear wheels. The sluggishness that some attribute to four wheel drive vehicles is not found with the Gallardo. The steering is superb and and the handling is solid.

2004 Lamborghini Galardo Vs. Ferrari 360 Modena

In many respects, the Gallardo's competition was strictly Ferrari. Both cars are high performance luxury sports cars with a price tag fairly similar. The 2000 Ferrari 360 Modena was powered with a 3.6 liter V-8 delivering 395 horsepower compared with Gallardo's 493 HP. The Ferrari's wheelbase was a few inches longer, the width about one inch wider and the height about one inch shorter. The Ferrari 360 was also a few hundred pounds lighter. Even with the difference in engines and horsepower the fuel efficiency was about the same give or take one mile per gallon.

1989 Lamborghini Countach

If you're looking for luxury sports cars you might look for a sleek Lamborghini. Lamborghini is an Italian automaker which operates as a subsidiary of Audi which itself is owned by Volkswagen.  Audi took over Lamborghini in 1998 from a group of Malaysian investors who themselves had taken over the company from Chrysler.

1989 Lamborghini Countach

The 1989 Lamborghini Countach featured in this article is a rare classic car indeed. It's an extremely recognizable luxury high power car. It's a car you've no doubt seen in a few motion pictures.

Lamborghini started production in 1963. Ferruccio Lamborghini desired to produce what people would characterize as the ultimate driving machine. There are quite a few that would agree that he achieved his goal. In a lot of ways everything about the Lamborghini is about power and speed.

Ferruccio  Lamborghini was wealthy even prior to building his factory for the production of luxury sports cars. After World War One he founded a successful tractor factory. His auto factory Sant’Agata Bolognese was built to essentially to compete against Ferrari. Many at the time thought that the decision was unwise and that he stood a chance of losing his fortune. Obviously Ferruccio  Lamborghini made a huge success of his company. Over the years the company changed ownership three times but still to this very day the Lamborghini brand today is at the forefront of luxury super sports car production.

Lamborghini Styling

The unique and sleek styling for the Lamborghini Countach can be credited to stylist Marcello Gandini. One of the popular stories about the Lamborghini Countach is that, when designing the car, Gandini was considered relatively new to the field of auto design.

Gandini gave the Countach it's distinctive scissor doors and it's Formula One style wing. This rear spoiler was optional but certainly provided better handling a higher speeds. The first series of Countach's were the LP400 followed by the LP400S in 1978. The LP-400 is thought to have the least drag of any of the Countach's. In 1982 the models were called the LP500's with increased engine power. After that were the LP500S.

The electric fans and the air ducts on the rear portion of the car help keep the engine cool and they obviously look good. These add a lot to the race car look.

The cars built for the U.S. market had to have some modifications. One such modification were larger front and rear bumpers. This of course took a bit out of the sleek front design but nevertheless Marcello Gandini ended up designing one of the most popular super sports cars, and in many ways race cars, in the history of auto design.

1989 Lamborghini Countach Specifications

The 1989 Lamborghini Countach was built with a V-12 315.8 cui displacement engine delivering  420 horsepower. This was the car built for the American market which also included a fuel injection system as opposed to it's original six carburetors. This is what brought down the U.S. version to the 420 HP. The European model with the six carburetors reportedly could produce 455 HP.
