1930 Ford Standard Coupe / Photos, Specs, Production

Ford built the 1930 Model A Coupe in a Standard and Deluxe model. The 1930 Ford Coupe was one of the most popular models around. In fact, Ford outsold Chevrolet in both 1929 and 1930. One reason was that the Model A's price started at a low $400 for the standard model making it a lot of car for the money. As a comparison, the Ford Town Sedan could have a price tag as much as $1,200.

The Different Ford Model A's

The Ford Model A’s, the cars that replaced the very popular Model T's were designed by both Henry Ford and Edsel Ford.

All of the Ford Model A's look generally similar. There was a difference however between the 1928 and 1929 models compared to the 1930 and 31 models. Some of these differences with the latter models included wider and lower fenders and a higher hood. Instead of the nickel plated radiator the 1931 model had one from stainless steel. Also the latter models had smaller diameter wheels.

As a side note, there was a Ford Model A in 1903 that of course didn't benefit from the lower prices made possible by the mass production assembly line. In July 1903, only a few weeks after the Ford Motor Company was incorporated, a Chicago dentist, Dr. Ernst Pfennig, became the first person to buy a Ford Model A for $850. Compare that to the price tags of the 1930 Model A's.

The list of Ford automobiles offered for the 1930 model year included the Standard Coupe, Deluxe Coupe, Sport Coupe, Tudor Sedan, Station Wagon, Town Sedan (Murray Body), Town Sedan (Briggs Body), Standard Fordor Sedan (Murray Body), Standard Fordor Sedan (Briggs Body), Victoria.

The Ford Deluxe Coupe offered roll down rear windows and a rumble seat and cost around $550. Another difference between the Model A Standard and Deluxe Coupe was that the latter had mohair seats where the Standard model featured cloth seats.

Ford Model A's were produced from December 1927 until March 1932 and was the first mass produced automobile to use safety glass for the windshield. Total Ford Model A production was more than 4 million vehicles.

The Model A had 4 wheel mechanical brakes (the Model T's had two wheel brakes)  and double action hydraulic shock absorbers. Top Speed was around 65 to 70 MPH.

Compared the the Model T's, the Ford Models A's were a more sophisticated automobile with a modern electrical system and a three speed gearbox. The Model A's also gained a reputation as being ruggedly constructed with many seen on the road decades later.

Total 1930 Ford Model A production was 854,000 vehicles of which 226,000 were Standard Coupes and 29,000 were Deluxe Coupes. The highest number Model A's produced that year were Tudor Sedans totaling 376,000.

The 1930 Ford Model A Coupe came with an Inline four cylinder 205 cubic inch 3.3 liter engine delivering 40 HP. Ford's 221 cubic inch eight cylinder engine was still in the design phase and would not be introduced until the 1932 Model 18.

Ford Model transmissions were floor mounted three speed manuals and the brakes were four wheel mechanical. Also mentioned above, the 1930 Ford Model A had double action hydraulic shock absorbers.

For years the Ford Model A was one of the most popular collector cars out there. As an owner of a Ford Model A you have access to two large auto clubs with chapters all over the nation.

The Model A Ford Club of America, Inc. is a California not-for-profit corporation and a national historical society dedicated to the restoration and preservation of Model A Ford vehicles as manufactured from 1928 through 1931.

The Model "A" Restorers Club, founded in 1952, holds as its aims the encouragement of members to acquire, restore, preserve and exhibit the Model "A" Ford. And most importantly, to enjoy the fellowship of other Model "A" Ford owners around the world.

As mentioned above, Ford Model A's are popular collectors cars. Two reasons the Model A's retained their popularity was that they were quite advanced over the previous Model T's and not nearly as many of them were produced. The 1930 cars were produced during the onset of the Great Depression and there was a downward pressure on prices.

Today restored Ford Model A's are found in a wide range of prices depending on model and originality. There are many Model A reproductions on the market as well. As of this writing 1930 Model A Coupes for sale will generally be priced from the mid teens to the $30,000 range.

The Citroen DS model automobile was first introduced at the 1955 Paris Auto Show. The Citroen at it's introduction was one of the more aerodynamic designed cars of that time. The design was very unique in every respect. It was a futuristic design from the French company that pioneered front wheel drive. Citroen was not the automaker to invent front wheel drive but it was the first to put it into mass production.

The company has been around for quite a long time being founded in 1919 by Andre-Gustave Citroen. The Frenchman was an industrialist and engineer and manufactured armaments and began his automobile company shortly after that. Citroen was very successful and the auto brand became the world's fourth largest during the 1930's. The French liked their Citroen automobiles. The Eiffel Tower at one time was lit up with lights spelling the Citroen name. Airplanes wrote the Citroen name on the skies over Paris.

Citroen eventually went bankrupt largely due to the Great Depression of the 1930's. Rather than disappearing, the company stayed in business after being taken over by Michelin who happened to be their largest creditor and tire supplier. Also in 1935 Andre-Gustave Citroen passed away at the age of 57 of stomach cancer. This was also the same disease that killed Edsel Ford of the Ford Motor Company in 1943.

The Long Run of the Citroen DS

The Citroen DS was produced from 1955 through 1975. The American DS model was last sold in the U.S. in 1972. The American models also had some differences compared to their European models.

During this long run the car had essentially the same design but with engine and mechanical improvements and alterations. Remarkably, the Citroen DS didn't receive it's first major alteration until eleven years after the car was introduced. The three-main bearing engine, dating back to the 11CV, was replaced with a higher output five-main bearing engine.

The automaker built sedans, station wagons and various ambulance and commercial variations. They even built Presidential Limousines which were in great favor at the time of Charle De Gaulle. Between the years of 1968 and 1972 the Citroen DS were built with four covered headlights where the inside lights turned with the wheels. They were also self leveling. This was the second major alteration to the original DS model.

The Citroen DS models had a large interior area compared to the car's overall size. This was achieved by positioning the wheels in the far corners of the body. Another very unique feature of the Citroen DS are the rear turn signal lights near the car's roof line.

During the twenty year span of production, Citroen built 1.5 million DS models. The Citroen DS automobiles sold pretty well in Europe but not in volumes in the U.S. Perhaps the design was better received in Europe than in the U.S. The Citroen DS  came out in 1955 when America was hooked on big-finned automobiles.

The Famous Citroen Hydro-Suspension

The hydro-pneumatic suspension, was powered by an engine pump raised the car as high as 10 inches through a lever inside. If you had a flat tire you could raise the car up until you could place a block under the frame to change the tire. No auto jack needed. Even if you didn't have a spare tire the Citroen DS-21 could ride on three tires by lifting the hub high above the ground with this type of suspension.

The 1971 Citroen D models offered three different engines, all inline four cylinders. These included a 121 cubic inch delivering 103 horsepower, a 133 cubic inch delivering 115 horsepower and a 143 cubic inch with 125 horsepower.

All of these which were offered beginning in 1966 (the 143 cubic inch came out in 1971) were great advancements over the 117 cubic inch with it's 60 horsepower inline four that came out with the original model in 1955.

Transmission for the car was a five speed manual.

Front and rear suspension consisted of an Independent, hydropneumatic sphere.

The dimensions of the 1971 Citroen DS-21 included a wheelbase of 123.0 inches, an overall length of 191.9 inches, an overall width of 71.0 inches and a height 57.9 inches. The car's curb weight was 2,888 lbs.

Citroen DS Series Collector Cars

The Citroen DS has a very unique design which may make it appealing to some collectors. Add to that the unique four headlight configuration and the Hydro Suspension and the automobile certainly is different from most others.

The Citroen DS is a good starter collector car for the prices are relatively inexpensive. Depending on the year and the condition and whether the car has been restored, you may find asking prices from about $5,000 to $12,000. Even more for museum mint condition DS models. The 1955 Citroen DS would be valued as a milestone automobile.

Some have restored Citroen DS models. If you do locate one to restore you should be able to pay a reasonable price. The car model was produced for twenty years meaning that there should be parts available however they likely won't be cheap. A restorer may also want to find a good mechanic because finding shops in the U.S. that handle French automobiles may be hard to find.

The 396 Cubic Inch V-8 1968 Camaro SS / Photos and Specs

The Chevrolet Camaro was Chevrolet's answer to the Ford Mustang. It was introduced in 1967. The Chevy Camaro was built on the same formula right down to the Mustang's wheelbase, chassis specs, and general powertrain. A styling difference versus the Mustang was General Motor's swoopier lines. You could buy your 1968 Chevy Camaro as a hardtop or convertible.

Chevrolet came out with their Camaro in September of 1966. The first generation Camaros ran from the 1967 models through the 1969 model years. This was Chevy’s first offering to compete directly against the Ford Mustang. While it took Chevrolet a few years to come out with a competitor to the Ford Mustang, when they did introduce the new Camaro model it was impressive. The Camaro styling caught on fast. The two car's were targeting the exact same market. As an added promotional boost for the new Chevy model, the 1967 Chevy Camaro was the Pace Car at the Indy 500 that year.

1968 was also the year that more automakers entered the "Pony Car" market. This included the American Motors Javelin and the Plymouth Barracuda. When American Motors came out with their 1968 Javelin, it was an automobile different from anything the company had built to date. Both of the above mentioned new muscle cars for 1968 were added to the current Dodge Challenger and Pontiac GTO muscle cars.

The 1968 Chevrolet Camaro looked little different from the 1967 model. The base Camaro was known to be the car that emphasized looks over performance and you could buy it with a six cylinder engine. One change for 1968 was the ventless side door windows. Another were the rectangular headlights which replaced the square ones from 1967. The 1968 Camaro was best known for it's muscle car performance. The car held it's own with it's fastest competitors during the 1960's.

The engines choices for the 1968 Camaro were either a 396 Cubic Inch V-8 delivering 325 horsepower or a 256 Cubic Inch Inline Six Cylinder delivering 155 horsepower. The V-8 Camaros were the more popular offering with some 184,000 vehicles produced versus about 51,000 six cylinder models. The next year in 1969 Chevrolet were add a 427 Cubic Inch V-8 delivering 425 horsepower as an option. The 396 Cubic Inch model had a claimed top speed of 135 MPH and Zero to 60 in 6.1 seconds.

Noteworthy 1968 Chevy Camaro Models

Two prime models of the 1968 Camaro were offered, an SS model and a RS model. The SS had stronger suspension and a small block V-8 along with simulated air intakes on the hood. Our photo shows the cowl air induction on top and in the center of the hood. The Camaro RS models had some cosmetic difference and hidden headlights along with a blacked out grille.

Another noteworthy 1968 Camaro was the Z/28. This was made available again to the public as a full-pledged racer with no A/C or an automatic transmission. The Camaro Z/28 won great popularity by winning ten out of thirteen races during it's first year of competition. The Z/28 engine suspension, and transmission were all built up. The 1969 Camaro Z/28 was The car in all Motorsport arenas winning the SCCA Trans Am series and NHRA Super Stock World Championship title.

The Camaro Super Sport was a fast car with superb performance but not quite to the degree of the Z/28. Nevertheless, because of the much lower price on the Super Sport model the SS model was sold about four to one over the higher priced Camaro Z/28.

A larger engine would be introduced in the  Camaro for 1969 as mentioned above, the 427 Cubic Inch V-8 delivering 425 horsepower.  In addition to the minor changes from 1967 to 1968, the square headlights from the 1967 Camaro were replaced with rectangular ones.

Camaros were built in the Norwood Ohio and Los Angeles California assembly plants. Your VIN tag, then called a serial number, will show an "N" or "L" depending on the plant. A Norwood Ohio assembled car will start off with a serial number (VIN) of 18N. The 1= Chevrolet and the 8= 1968. The digits on the serial number that follow, which can be up to six, represent the Fisher body number.

As mentioned above, the two engines available in the 1968 Chevy Camaro were a  396 Cubic Inch V-8 delivering 325 horsepower and a 256 Cubic Inch Inline Six Cylinder delivering 155 horsepower.

Transmission options included a three or four speed manual or a Hydra-Matic automatic.

Dimensions for the 68 Camaro SS were a wheelbase of 108.0 inches, an overall length of 184.7 inches, a width of 72.5 inches and a weight of about 3,350 lbs.

All of the first generation late 1960's Camaros are popular collector cars. Depending on the model you'll find asking prices for first generation fully restored Chevrolet Camaros in the range of $30,000 top $40,000 and higher. There are quite a bit of Camaro modified hot rods on the market. The degree of restoration and the degree of originality will drive current prices.

Finding a non restored first generation Camaro might not be easy but you'll likely pay from a few thousand dollars to perhaps $12,000 for a good project car.
